Taito sets fire to Bubble Bobble

Retro games directly ported to iOS are often about as much fun as being kicked in the face by a furiously demented opossum. (In related news: Dear Sega, Please stop crapping all over our Mega Drive memories with your dreadful iOS emulator. L&H, Podgamer.) Now and again, though, a publisher updates a classic title to work with iOS rather than fight against it. Taito’s Space Invaders Infinity Gene had a good crack and very nearly succeeded (although Stu wasn’t overly enamoured with it), and now Taito’s about to weave its magic on Bubble Bobble with Bubble Bobble Double.

Unfortunately, when I say ‘magic’, I really mean WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE THEY DONE?

It appears Bubble Bobble’s been turned into a tedious tap-based reaction game with minor castle defence overtones. Because if there’s one thing the App Store is lacking, it’s castle defence games.

Here’s hoping the gameplay offers more depth than that YouTube video suggests, or that the promised “faithful recreation of the classic Bubble Bobble arcade game” bundled with Double doesn’t make you want to hurl your device out of the window. Still, at least we’ve got Qwak.

Tragically I thought that looked a bit like a Darius style shmup instead Bubble Bobble, before clicking on the vid. Which would have been infinitely more enjoyable than what it was.
