If classic 2D platform games were sweets, Pix’n Love Rush would be like shoving an entire bag of pick ’n’ mix into your face, somehow surviving a sugar-related head explosion, and then repeatedly shoving more bags in until inevitable but blissful death.
The game is Super Mario, Bubble Bobble, Doodle Jump, Manic Miner, Canabalt, Space Invaders and Rainbow Islands smashed into WarioWare mechanics with a hammer. And it’s utterly brilliant.

The exciting mystery match where a plucky contestant chooses a theme and tries to pick six consecutive decent games in that vein without landing on something fatally unendurable. Today's theme: hunger.

is Big Bad Brush’s Big Bad Flower.
Sparkling, sparky little rub-your-head-and-pat-your-tum number where you draw circles around beasties (but tap their gunfire) (and further circle-immune monsters) to immobilise them in bubbles, then swipe to whisk those bubbles away. It’s a slow build-up (you’ll probably go through the whole of the initial Back Garden stage in a single go) but soon has your finger whizzing around like an atomic snail.
The game could do with a bit of fine tuning (the way things turned amazingly sticky when I tripped over a bubbling so was now reacting to monster-flung danger instead of heading them off as they appeared suggests that I wasn’t supposed to be picking off the cast that quickly; and the levels just stop when you meet your soapy punch-up quota even if you’re still under siege) but this is a refreshing focus-seizer that’ll probably have fifty clones in the hideous iTunes Shop by next week.

is Sean Duffy’s Cosmosis.
It’s a fairly standard left-to-right shooter with your stately space galleon shooting things then shooting more things and bigger things, but the artful dodge is that you also lose a life if anything gets past you.
Rough round the edges (it’s not clear enough when you lose one of those precious ships, and there are no panic bombs or something so frustratingly you can be jinkingly defending one bit of screen and there’s nothing you can do in time about the beastie over the way; there’s a nuke power-up but these can’t be pocketed for later) but a bit of a gripper.

is Madfinger’s Samurai 2: Dojo.
You have all sorts of power-ups and combos and so on, but I successfully entertained my rugged self with only the Attack and Dodge buttons. (You spring across the board to auto-attack whoever’s nearest.) Actually, looking it up, this is a promo for the real, unfreebie sequel, Vengeance, so HA HA BET YOU’RE FEELING FAIRLY SILLY WITH ALL YOUR FANCY MANOEUVRES NOW.
Your life bar is hopelessly confusing, filling in orange rather than just letting the red run out. There are in-game ads. I liked it when you hit the bloke with your sword and he slid apart.

Ooooh. This looks like a beautiful neon Pac-Man, with Soko-Ban-like box puzzles dotted about, occasional and exciting pursuit-and-stealth moments, and great weapons and power-ups.
It also looks like there are 24 different levels, many of which provide a fresh take on the game, online leaderboards, and a great soundtrack, along with dollops of humour through a witty script.
LET’S HOPE THEY DON’T RUIN EVERYTHING BY MAKING THE CONTROLS REALLY AWFUL!

You’re the black dot. Drag through yellow dots. Avoid white dots. White dots move. Every yellow dot caught spawns a white dot. Black and white dots may pulse. You’ll have to beat it. A flowering of swears.
