Thumpies: Get down! Get back up again! Zarjaz!

Spiffo, I’ve been waiting for this to happen. Big Blue Bubble’s Thumpies is a superior rhythm game that benefits enormously from the specially composed music; instead of bongoing the grotesque chumpbundles around to your terrible taste in CDs, you “compose” a layer by following their dizzied bouncing and that’s then added to the soundtrack for the next sequence. Meanwhile, butterflies flap around as the currency for unlocking (EXTRA CHARACTERS, extra characters, not levels) and you have to wriggle a skip in your conducting to net them before the tumbling beasties scoff the loot as they bob. (If you lose the beat altogether your entire bank escapes all over the screen promoting chaos.) It’s altogether groovespangular and the game’s just plunged to an excuse-invalidating 59p/€0,79/99¢. If you’re still not convinced because you’re D Tomlinson or R Morley, you can try the three-level demo (with in-game unlock). There’s also an all-new iPad version that I’ve not played and is still £2.99/€3,99/$4.99. (ALERT! The demo unlock didn’t seem to work for me and in fact I’ve been charged again for the complete version. I’ll sort that out now, but I’d recommend that if you like the demo then you buy the full game separately.)

Man, these things really drive home how tremendous Sands of Time is. Ever since Ubisoft nailed the third-person platformer with the revamped Prince of Persia (then banged that nail into a big coffin with Warrior Within for which I blame you, YES YOU PERSONALLY, the idiot non-Sands of Time buying public) everyone’s been copying the copy of a copy. Including Ubi themselves: Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles is currently on sale for 59p/€0,79/99¢ and has triumphantly forgotten nearly every single lesson established by its venerated ageparent. Ah, Sunday afternoons with an 8-bit computer, a text adventure and INSTANT DEATH. What could be more fun? If your answer is “nothing, sir” and not “beating myself to death with a spanner”, you should probably download the rather spiffy, universal and suddenly very (but probably temporarily) free Frotz right this second. Frotz is a Z-Machine interpreter, enabling you to play more text adventures than you can shake a stick at (including the original Zork). And if you’ve some Z-Machine files lying about on your (“Legally purchased compilations” – Ed), you can upload them via FTP. Even better, because Frotz is universal, the iPad interface gives you a keyboard that doesn’t make your thumbs want to die after you’ve been playing Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy for five hours.

Wormpocalypse

The zombie apocalypse is played out. Old hat. And I’ve come to terms with the nuclear apocalypse, so long as it makes the world exactly like Fallout: New Vegas. Point is, the end of the world is looking mighty anticlimactic these days. I need something new. Something different. Something like… a giant spiky worm? Sure, why the hell not. Super Mega Worm‘s message is one I think we can all identify with: stop littering or a giant worm’s going to devour you. It’s a powerful and thought-provoking indictment of our current environmental policy – one that becomes all the more chilling when you consider that our wriggly pink Doombringer gains the power to blast lasers out of his mouth at level three. Which is all to say that it’s wicked fun. Launching yourself out of the ground and skewering the squishy, screaming blood balloons otherwise known as human beings on your 32 rows of teeth is nearly as gratifying as it is sociopathic, and any game that uses live cattle as its central source of health is all right in our book. And hey, the full version’s only 59p/€0,79/99¢ right now, so why not? Plus, how can you say “no” to that face? The answer is that you can’t, because by the time you can see that face, it’s already too late.

Magical (Price) Drop

Imagine a developer really liked Magical Drop, but thought (rightly) that Magical Drop for iOS was akin to a pile of fetid dingo’s kidneys. Imagine that developer then created a similar game that worked really nicely on iOS, boasting great controls and graphics, then turned it into a universal app, and then gave it away entirely for free! Well, you’ll have to imagine that for a bit longer, because the rather spiffy Linkoidz isn’t free, but it is just 59p/€0,79/99¢ right now and very much worth the cash. Unless you hate Magical Drop, of course, in which case GO AWAY, FOOLISH PERSON LACKING IN TASTE.

(Almost) cashless racing

If you liked the sound of EA’s overhead-view hillbilly dirt-ride Reckless Racing when we reviewed it a few days ago, but were put off by the small amount of content available for the £1.79/€2,39/$2.99 asking price, then we’ve totally got some good news for you. Sadly it’s not that it’s had another half-dozen tracks added to it, but that the price has been brutally hacked down to a mere 59p/€0,79/99¢. For that it’s practically worth having just to show off the sparkly teeny-tiny graphics to people. If you’re, y’know, really shallow. And you have a 4th-gen machine. And don’t mind playing every track several times on really easy settings before you can have a go at the hard opponents. But frankly we’d give them that much just to encourage the excellent control options. 59p!

Urbanix: Art attack

It’s nearly Halloween, and you know what that means, right? Well, do you? We actually didn’t know it meant this: iThing game sales. Like, an almost comical number of them. But hey, back in my day, Halloween meant choking down candy dispensed by creepy neighbors and praying it wasn’t laced with poison or – worse – raisins, so I’m actually pretty all right with the holiday’s desperate ploy to appeal to a new generation. Anyway, onto the gruesome price tag dismemberment! First up, there’s Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode 1, which is only a few seconds old in App Store years, but has been chopped from £5.99/€7,99/$9.99 to £3.99/€5,49/$6.99. Our very own Pod Lord Stu – in between lashes of his cruel whip because we weren’t thanking him hard enough for whipping us – said it’s “pretty much what you’d expect.” Do you like predictability? Does it make you feel safe? Then you should probably buy this game. These games are cheap, but my undying respect is… entirely conditional. Hit the “continue” button or I’ll hate you. (Continued...)

Imminent chart spike alert

This is GT Racing: Motor Academy, a Gran Turismo clone from Gameloft that’s just been reduced from £2.99/€3,99/$4.99 to 59p/€0,79/99¢, having been very prettily updated with Retina graphics support a couple of weeks ago. Watch this puppy fly up the charts like a rocket to the moon. (Starting position: No. 106 in the Games listing, unlisted in the All Apps and Top Grossing top 200s.) Do beware, though – the recent update takes the app’s size up to a breathtaking 1GB or thereabouts by the time it’s installed, so don’t even bother thinking about it if you’ve got an 8GB machine and might want to have more than two other apps on it at the same time.
